The Name Game

Changing your name after marriage is a completely personal decision with many alternatives for today’s couples. There are a variety of options including a name change on your official marriage license but NOT on your other legal documentation including license, SS card, passport, etc. If however you decide to take the plunge you need to be prepared for all the administrative paperwork ahead. And since the honeymoon is probably the closest to the wedding…changing your passport is a good place to start.

Consider getting started about 3 months before the wedding to ensure you’ll have your new passport before your “Big Trip”. For your convenience you can get a copy of an application at your local post office. Some even offer the service of taking your picture. You will need to mail in your application and photo(s) with a certified copy of your marriage license to the appropriate passport center. If you’re not renewing your passport (name change only), there’s generally no fee. You’ll get the same passport back, with a stamp on the back with your new name. If you’re also renewing your passport, then there will be a fee and your new passport will include your name change. Your new passport will be good for 10 years. Remember, the sooner you get started the better. Expediting the procedure could mean incurring extra fees. Experts suggest going directly to your local passport renewal office for quicker service and sending your parcel certified to ensure its receipt.
